Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

That Willie Do It: Men’s Basketball Storms Past Rockland CC behind Davis’s Season-Best Effort

(Valhalla, NY) - For a team averaging more than 85 points per game heading into their 10th game of the 2019-2020 season, the last thing opponents needed was for the Westchester Community College Men's Basketball team to find another weapon among a roster that has had few issues scoring points this season. On Thursday night at Viking Gymnasium, that is exactly what happened. Five Vikings scored in double figures, and freshman Willie Davis (Bronx, NY/Logan HS) scored a career-high 19 points as the Vikings notched their first NJCAA Region XV win of the 2019-2020 season with a 95-59 win over Rockland Community College.

With the win, Westchester is now 7-3 overall, and 1-1 in Region XV and Mid-Hudson Conference play.

As has been the norm throughout Westchester's first 10 games of the season, opening strongly was not an issue. Freshman Noe Fleurimond (Greenburgh, NY/Woodlands HS) scored five of his 10 points during the first 1:23 of play as Westchester opened up an 8-0 lead, and never looked back. Only 5:21 into the game, a Daniel Barrera (Elmsford, NY/Alexander Hamilton HS) jumper made it 24-4 in favor of Westchester. Late in the first half, a 14-2 Vikings run made it a 58-21 game ... and the rout was on.

Westchester led 61-28 at halftime after shooting 53% over the first 20 minutes.

The second half saw almost every Viking score at least three points as 10 different Vikings scored during the night.

Davis was outstanding, scoring his 19 points on 6 for 8 shooting, as well as a 6 for 7 effort from the free throw line. He added four rebounds and two steals during an outstanding all-around effort.

Also for the Vikings, sophomore Joe Zayer (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South HS) scored 16 points on 6 for 12 shooting, while adding five rebounds, Barrera scored 11 points, Fleurimond and freshman Malik Moore (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS) scored 10 points apiece.

Westchester held a 47%-31% edge in  the shooting game, and was dominant on the boards, out-rebounding Rockland  51-35.

Westchester returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 24 when the Vikings host NJCAA Division II powerhouse Monroe Community College at 1:00 p.m.
