(Valhalla, NY) - While Tuesday night's Women's Volleyball match between Monroe College-Bronx and Westchester Community College may have featured the visiting team's first ever win over the Vikings, such an event was most likely not the story. Instead, if the five-set, marathon, thriller of a contest had a theme, it was a Westchester CC squad that could have gone down quickly and quietly, but refused to give up. While the result was a 3-2 Monroe College victory, the match featured a level of play from Westchester CC to make it into a thriller that could carry this young team for the remainder of the season.
Sophomore
Gabriela Faria (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS) amassed eight kills, three service aces, five digs, and two solo blocks, and fellow sophomore
Melody Pabon (Bronx, NY/Celia Cruz) added seven kills, four service aces, and five digs as the Vikings overcame a 2-0 deficit to the visiting Express to force a fifth and deciding set, ultimately losing 3-2. With the loss, Westchester is now 1-3 overall, and 1-3 in Region XV play.
Monroe (3-0, 3-0 Region XV) captured the first two sets 16-25 and 22-25, and appeared poised for a quick end to the evening ... but those plans changed in a hurry as the Vikings stormed back in the most dramatic of fashions. Thanks in large part of 17 service errors and a strong defensive night overall, Westchester rallied to capture the third and fourth sets, 25-18 and 25-23, respectively. However, Monroe had one last rally in them as the Express captured the deciding set 15-6.
Also for Westchester, freshman
Cristina Stasolla (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Maria Regina) had 10 assists and eight digs, while sophomore
Tia Sue (Sleepy Hollow, NY/Sleepy Hollow HS) had five digs.
Westchester Community College returns to action on Thursday, September 19 when the Vikings travel to Sullivan Community College for a 7:00 p.m. Mid-Hudson Conference match.
