Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

A Win FIT to Celebrate - Vikings Top the Tigers for 1st Time Since 2012

September 26, 2022
New York, NY/Suffern, NY – Following a flurry of games this weekend where Women's Volleyball played back to back double dual matches, the Vikings came out even, going 2-2 overall in region play.  On Saturday, the team traveled to BMCC, topping FIT and falling to BMCC.  On Saturday, the team played at Rockland as they beat Bronx, but lost to Monroe Bronx.
Saturday started with a historic victory over FIT.

For the first time since 2012, Weschester defeated the Tigers by a score of 3-1 (25-13, 25-19, 17-25, 25-22).  Mikaelyn Hannon (Yonkers, NY/Peekskill HS) led the Viking attack with 12 kills.  Gabriella Cresti Caetano (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers HS) and Ireana Olivo (Yonkers, NY/Maria Regina HS) chipped in 10 and 9 kills, respectively.  The team was also efficient at countering the FIT attack as Olivo logged 19 digs to match up with Sara Ortiz's (Elmsford, NY/Whiteplains HS) 18.

The team moved on to play BMCC, but this time the Vikings were outlasted by the Panthers losing 1-3.  After shaking off the first game played to 14-25, the Vikings fought back to even the match wit ha 25-23 win.  They then had a chance to go up 2-1 but eventually lost game 3, 26-28.  That loss seemed to slow the team's momentum for good as they were unable to keep the final game close, falling 14-25.

The team looked to rebound on Sunday and did so in a big way, winning 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-10) vs Bronx Community College.  This game featured big contributions from the Viking bench as Victoria Amaya (Greenburgh, NY) led the team with 7 services aces and 3 kills.  Sharon Chavez (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) had 5 aces of her own and Shirley Pacheco logged 7 assists.

Their final game of the busy weekend was against the Express of Monroe Bronx.  Though the team hung in there for the first two games, losing 24-26 and 22-25, the fatigue of the weekend may have set in as they were unable to force a game four, losing the final 10-25.  Hannon once again led the attack as she logged 8 kills.
With the split, the Vikings are now 5-2 on the season and return to action on Tuesday to take on Dutchess at 7pm at home in the Viking Gymnasium.  With both teams undefeated in the Mid-Hudson Conference, this should prove to be an exciting match up.
