It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Leonard Spina on January 21, 2025. Spina served as our program's long time softball coach, taking over in 1978.  At the time he tabbed as a last-minute, & short term replacement after the resignation of the previous coach.  What he thought would be a new experience for a year or two turned into a coaching career that spanned over 35 years.  During his tenure, he compiled over 430 wins and qualified for the regional tournament over 25 times.  His teams won three Mid Hudson Conference Championships as well as a Regional Championship in 1980. 

Spina also coached two NJCAA All-Americans in Denise Jones and Barbar Swanson.  In 2010, he was inducted into the 2010 Westchester Community College Athletics Sports Hall of Fame.  "Lenny" had remained an active member of the WCC sports alumni and frequent attendant of the Sports Hall of Fame, including for Jones' and Swanson's Hall of Fame inductions in 2018 and 2021, respectively.

Leonard, born on July 6, 1946, in Valhalla, NY, was a cherished member of our SUNY WCC community. Len was a dedicated employee in our Engineering Department, serving the college from 1974 until 2016. His warmth and presence will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
