Lady Vikings Come up Just Short in Heroic Comeback Effort

Jan 21

Valhalla, NY- The Westchester Community College Women's Basketball team returned to action this past Tuesday after by far their most difficult stretch of the season. After playing a Division 1 team, and 2 nationally ranked opponents they returned to action to hopefully avenge one of their early season losses. It was the rematch of the November 6th game vs Essex County College, this time taking place in Newark, New Jersey.

The game started out a little slow for Westchester, missing their first 4 shots. Then they got rolling, both teams did as the score after 1 was 19 to 14 in favor of Essex. However, in the second it was all Essex. They won the second quarter giving them a 19 point lead heading into the half.

The Lady Vikings most definitely hit their stride in the second half. They put on a dynamic press and made it very difficult for Essex to advance and get comfortably on offense. They had 8 steals in the second half and that was a big reason they were able to get back into the game. They were able to cut the lead to one multiple times. Some late free throw shooting woes and a few costly turnovers was the big issue down the stretch. Freshman Saniya Bell(Ossining, NY/Ossining High School) had a huge game and broke out of her small slump and had 29 points in total and 23 in the second half and that was a big reason for the near comeback.

SUNY WCC will be back in action this Thursday at home against Dutchess Community College in a double header with the men's team. The ladies play at 5:00 PM and are looking to get back on track. Come out and support!!
