Box Score (Valhalla, NY) - It has been three years in the making, but after a yeoman's campus-wide effort to bring Women's Basketball back to Westchester Community College, the Vikings returned home to much fanfare on Thursday night, dropping a battle to Nassau Community College that proved that WCC can run with the very best that Region XV has to offer. Freshman
Shanaya Jones (Bronx, NY/Health Opportunities HS) netted a game-high 26 points as the Vikings gave NCC all they could handle, dropping their home opener 83-69. With the loss, WCC falls to 0-3, but is improving by leaps and bounds every time they take to the court.
Jones was incredible scoring 16 second half points as the two teams played nearly even basketball during the final 20 points, and fellow freshman
Denise Crockett (Mount Vernon, NY/Thornton HS) had another fine game with 13 points. Also for WCC,
Evelyn Medina (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck HS) added nine points, all via three-pointer, and
Ambar Rincon (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers HS) added nine as well.
After falling behind 7-0 early, Westchester battled back and trailed 20-11 at the end of the first quarter, before taking a 40-28 deficit into halftime. After being outscored 20-15 during the third quarter, the Vikings scored a season-high 26 points during the final frame, outscoring the visiting Lions during that stretch.
Westchester Community College returns to action on Saturday, January 20 when the Vikings travel to Mercer County (NJ) Community College for a 12:00 p.m. tip-off.
