(Selden, NY) - Freshman
Kevin Umanzor (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) scored the first goal of his WCC career, and fellow freshman
Guilherme Griza (
Novo Hamburgo-RS (Brazil)/
Colegio Marista Pio XII) stopped 10 out of 11 shots as the Westchester Community College Men's Soccer team notched a 1-1 tie against defending Region XV Champion Suffolk Community College on Thursday afternoon at Suffolk CC. With the draw, the Vikings are now 6-2-1 overall and 4-2-1 in Region XV.
In what was a heavyweight battle between two of the premiere teams in the region, the game was as even as a college soccer game can be as both teams played stout defense and did not allow many scoring opportunities. Shortly before halftime, freshman
Luis Galeano (Mamaroneck, NY/Rye Neck HS) found Umanzor for a spectacular goal that gave the Vikings the halftime lead. And for much of the second half, WCC appeared to be on the verge of one of the biggest wins in program history.
However, luck would not be on the Westchester side. In the 90th minute, an outside shot from Suffolk caused Griza to lunge at the ball, and - playing in the rain - he slipped, allowing an otherwise average shot past him to tie the game with only second remaining. The goal was the only glitch during an otherwise stellar day for the rookie keeper.
Westchester dominated the scoring opportunities during the extra periods as
Chris Vallejo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville HS) and
Jose Tovar (Yonkers, NY/Riverside HS) both had golden opportunities to end the game, but both were denied.
The game marked the eighth time this season that Westchester allowed one goal or fewer this season. In fact, the only time that WCC has allowed more than one goal in a game was during a loss to Nassau Community College on Sept. 22.
Overall, Suffolk out-shot WCC 10-9, and the Sharks had 13 corner kicks to four from WCC. Suffolk also amassed five yellow cards, while Westchester CC had one.
Up next for Westchester Community College is their biggest game of the 2018 season when the Vikings travel to Borough of Manhattan Community College on Saturday, Oct. 6 for a 12:00 p.m. match-up. A Westchester win will put the Vikings in a driver's seat to host a Region XV playoff game, and keep the hopes of a second place regional finish alive. A loss will all but guarantee that the opening round of Region XV play will be on the road for WCC.
