Women's Basketball Beats Bronx CC

A Paige-Turner: Collins scores 29 points as Women's Basketball outlasts Bronx CC 77-71 in Double OT for first win of 2018

Feb 15

Box Score (Valhalla, NY) - After three years between games, and 11 consecutive losses to open the 2018 season, it may have seemed at times as if the first win would never come for the Westchester Community College Women's Basketball team. And thanks to the game of the year in Viking Gymnasium on Thursday night against Bronx Community College, the Vikings and their fans had to wait even longer. But, in the end, WCC outlasted Bronx CC, 77-71 in double overtime to set off a wild celebration. As the program continues its growth, this team will be remembered as the one that brought women's basketball team after a wait of more than 1,000 days ... and 50 grueling minutes on Thursday night.

It was indeed an unforgettable night of basketball at Westchester Community College, particularly for Paige Collins (Jamaica, NY/Wadleigh HS). After a strong 11-point first half, Collins broke loose during the second half of play and overtime, scoring 18 points during the final 30 minutes of play to finish with a career-high 29 points to help lead WCC to victory. And she would need every one of those points as Bronx Community College certainly did not go down without a battle. The Broncos actually had an opportunity to win the game in regulation. Westchester led 55-54 during the closing seconds, and Bronx made a desperation attempt to win the game. As a Bronco drove to the basket, she was fouled with 0.7 seconds remaining, putting her at the free throw line for two shots that could have won the game. She hit the first attempt, but missed the second, and the game went to overtime tied at 55.

The teams traded baskets throughout the first overtime, and an Ambar Rincon (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers HS) lay-up with just over a minute left appeared to put the Vikings ahead for good, but Bronx CC tied the game with 42.2 second left to play, forcing the second extra session tied at 63.

That is when Westchester tightened up on defense. During the final five minutes of play, WCC allowed only eight points, and two separate 6-0 runs - the second of which featured four points from Collins - put Westchester up for good, leading to the 77-71 final.

Denise Crockett (Mount Vernon, NY/Thornton HS) had a huge night with 18 points. Rincon added 13 points, and Shanaya Jones (Bronx, NY/Health Opportunities HS) had a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.

Incredibly, Westchester had 25 assists on their 33 made field goals.

For the first time in three years, Westchester Community College seeks a winning streak in Women's Basketball. The Vikings return to action on Saturday, Feb. 17 when they host Sullivan Community College at 1:00 p.m.
