Mello Drama: Sophomore’s Double-Double leads Volleyball team to win over SUNY Orange in five-set thriller

(Middletown, NY) - What a difference a year makes.

One year after being swept twice by eventual Mid-Hudson Conference runner-up and Region XV Quarterfinalist, SUNY Orange, Westchester Community College traveled to Middletown, NY on Thursday night and proved that Orange CC may in fact enjoy the kind of success they had a season ago, but if they are going to go that far, they will have to get past the Vikings to do it.

Sophomore Taylor Mello (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Putnam Valley HS) notched a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs, and sophomore Madison Young (Greenburgh, NY/Woodlands HS) added 15 kills, seven digs, and three blocks as Westchester Community College won a thriller of a match, 3-2, to improve to 1-1 for the season.

Westchester won the opening set, 25-14 before the host Colts stormed back to win the next two sets, 25-17 and 25-20. However, WCC proved to be resilient, winning the fourth set 25-21, and the final set, 15-13, to score an emotional victory.

Also for Westchester, sophomore Lindsay Leggio (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) just missed a double-double of her own, chipping in 42 assists and nine digs, Alysha Owens (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon HS) added eight kills, and freshman Melody Pabon (Bronx, NY/Celia Cruz) had 11 digs and eight assists.

With a 1-1 road trip against the top-two teams in the Mid-Hudson Conference  from 2017 behind them, Westchester now comes home to the friendly confines of Viking Gymnasium as WCC welcomes Dutchess Community College on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 11:00 a.m.
