(Suffern, NY) - Entering the day having lost to Borough of Manhattan Community College during each of the last two seasons, the Westchester Community College Women's Volleyball team knew that a win over the Panthers would be a crucial step in the Vikings potential journey to the upcoming NJCAA Region XV Championships. And on Saturday, the Vikings did just that. Sophomore
Alysha Owens (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon HS) notched a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs, and fellow sophomore
Madison Young (Greenburgh, NY/Woodlands HS) also had a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs as Westchester CC downed BMCC 3-1.
With the win, WCC is now 5-2 overall, and 5-2 in Region XV play. And if the season ended today, Westchester CC would be a qualifier for the Region XV post-season tournament.
For the third time over five wins this season. Westchester dropped the first set during a win (21-25), but then rallied to win the final three sets, 25-15, 25-18, and 25-22.
Owens and Young were as efficient as they were dominant, combining to hit .584 while amassing a combined 31 kills.
Also for Westchester, sophomore
Taylor Mello (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Putnam Valley HS) had eight kills and 20 digs, while
Lindsay Leggio (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) chipped in a double-double of her own with 25 assists and 11 digs.
The win came on the heels of a competitive 3-1 loss to Region XV powerhouse Fashion Institute of Technology. Westchester won the opening set, 27-25, before FIT won the next three sets, 24-26, 22-25, and 13-25, but WCC was highly competitive throughout the match.
Young had perhaps her best outing of the 2018 season, contributing 20 kills on 25 attacks, 10 blocks, and three service aces. Mello added 10 kills, and Leggio racked up 39 assists and six digs.
Westchester Community College will have little time to rest as the Vikings are back at it on Sunday, Sept. 23 for another double-dual at Rockland CC. At noon, WCC faces Hostos Community College, followed by a match against Bronx CC, both of which will be crucial Region XV match-ups.
