(Bronx, NY) - There may have been a 35-day layoff between games, but if there was going to be any sign of rustiness for the Westchester Community College Women's Basketball team, it did not travel with the team to Bronx Community College on Tuesday. If anything, the Vikings ushered in a New Year with a fresh sense of determination over 40 splendid minutes, during which Westchester dominated the host Broncos, 89-42 on Tuesday night. With the win, WCC is now 1-1.
A year after splitting the season series with Bronx - including a 77-71 win over Bronx in double overtime on February 15, 2018 to give WCC its only win of the campaign - Westchester left no doubt on Tuesday, outscoring Bronx 31-8 during the first quarter, and cruising from there. The Vikings led 54-22 at halftime, after shooting 43% over the first 20 minutes.
Sophomore
Paige Collins (Jamaica, NY/Wadleigh HS) enjoyed one of the finest games of her career, scoring 17 points, grabbing 19 rebounds, and was one steal away from the first triple-double of her career. Collins shot 50% from the floor (8 for 16), and added three assists.
Sophomore
Shannon Bandoo (Yonkers, NY/American Sign Language HS) led WCC with 20 points, and added seven rebounds, while freshman
Chynna Mincey (Bronx, NY/Business of Sports HS) chipped in 15 points, and added seven rebounds and six steals. Five Vikings scored in double figures as sophomore
Ambar Rincon (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers HS) scored 11 points, and freshman
Jada Tom (Elmsford, NY/Alexander Hamilton HS) scored 13 points.
Also for the Vikings, sophomore
Shanaya Jones (Bronx, NY/Health Opportunities HS) had 13 steals, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Bronx CC had a 67-55 rebounding edge, but Westchester emphatically won the turnover battle, amassing 25 turnovers, compared to 69 by the Broncos.
Westchester CC returns to action, on Tuesday, Jan. 22 when they travel to Suffolk Community College for a 5:00 p.m. start.
