Game Recap: Baseball |

A Luis Cannon: Gomez ties All-Time program wins record as Baseball sweeps Doubleheader with Orange CC

(Middletown, NY) - Sophomore Luis Gomez (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond's) tied the all-time career wins record for a Westchester Community College pitchers, tossing a complete game, while striking out six batters, and freshman Michael Cox (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas HS) continued his torrid stretch at the plate as the Westchester Community College Baseball team swept a doubleheader from Orange Community College, 14-9 and 7-3 on Sunday at Orange CC. With their second and third consecutive wins, the Vikings are now 16-9 overall and 3-5 in Mid-Hudson Conference and Region XV play.

By improving to 3-1 this season, Gomez now has 14 career wins, tying Anthony Shkrelja, who played for WCC during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

The opener saw Orange CC (8-12, 2-6) score twice during the opening inning, but Westchester's bats come alive from there. The Vikings scored three runs during the second inning, and then five runs during the fourth and fifth innings to take a 13-3 lead. Orange rallied late to close the gap, but the effort was not enough.

Sophomore Steve Guzman (Bronx, NY/John F. Kennedy HS) had another fine day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with three RBI's and two runs scored. He reached base four times during the game.  Cox, sophomore Steve Messerschmitt (Carmel, NY/Carmel HS), freshman Aaron Roman (Pelham, NY/Pelham HS), and freshman Brian McBride (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley HS) had two hits apiece, with Cox scoring three times, and Roman driving in three runs. Westchester knocked out 14 hits, and walked six times.

Freshman Hector Camacho (Harrison, NY/Harrison HS) pitched into the sixth inning to earn his second win of the season, and Cox closed out the game coming in for a scoreless relief appearance.

The nightcap saw Westchester's bats cool a bit, but their seven runs were more than enough for Gomez, who improved to 3-1.  The Vikings scored during each of the first four innings to take a 6-0 lead, and cruise from there.

Messerschmitt went 2 for 4 with two RBI's and two runs scored, including his second home run of the 2019 season. Guzman and Cox had two hits apiece. Also for Westchester, freshman CJ Spence (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon HS) drove in two runs.

Westchester Community College returns to action on Thursday, April 18 when the Vikings host Ulster Community College for a 3:30 p.m. single game.
