(Bayside, NY) - Freshman
Malik Sainnoval (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood HS) had a fantastic day, finishing the 100-Meter dash in an outstanding 12.19, and leading the Men's 1600-Meter Sprint Relay team to a victory, and sophomore
Alysha Owens (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon HS) qualified for the NJCAA National Championships in her second event in as many weeks as the Westchester Community College Track & Field team enjoyed an outstanding performance at the Queensborough Community College Relays on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13 in Bayside, New York. While there were no team results recorded, Westchester proved to be fiercely competitive among a talented field.
Owens, who qualified for the NJCAA Championships in the Discus Throw two weeks ago at the Mount Saint Mary College Invitational, finished second in the Shot Put with a throw of 9.67 meters to easily qualify in that event for the NJCAA Championships. While she did not place in the Hammer Throw, Owens's practice attempts were close enough to the qualification threshold that she very well could qualify for three events at the May National Championships.
Sainnoval was terrific, particularly while competing in the Sprint Relay event as he, freshman
Kumani McLean (Tarrytown, NY/Irvington HS), freshman
Nestor Ortiz (Irvington, NY/Irvington HS), and freshman
Travis Patterson (Yonkers, NY/Roosevelt HS) became the first Viking relay team to earn an event victory.
Also for Westchester, freshman
Randy Culcay (Ossining, NY/Ossining HS) earned a top-10 finish in the 10,000-Meter run (39.41), sophomore Giovanni Castillo (North White Plains, NY/Valhalla HS) earned an eighth place finish in the Hammer Throw (24.10 Meters), and the WCC 4x100 Meter Relay team and 4x400 Meter Relay team earned top-five finishes.
Westchester Community College returns to action on Saturday, April 20 when the Vikings travel to Albany, New York for the Bobbi Palma University of Albany Spring Classic.
