(Winter Haven, FL) - For many teams, getting back into action less than 24 hours after as emotional of a win as one can achieve during the early going of a season is the recipe for a let-down. But, this is not that kind of team. And, if the play of the Westchester Community College Baseball team is a sign of what is coming, there is something quite special brewing for the Vikings this season. One day after an incredible 14-13 win over the nation's #12 ranked team, and on the same day it was announced that Westchester CC has achieved its first national ranking since the 2017 season, the Vikings enjoyed everything but a let-down kind of day. Freshman
Brian Beehler (Pawling, NY/Pawling HS) opened the day with a big game at the plate, and closed the day with his first career win on the mound as the Vikings improved to 10-2 overall, and 6-0 in Florida, with a 20-11 and 7-3 sweep of SUNY Adirondack at the Russ Matt College Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida.
The 20 runs were the most scored by a Viking team since a 20-8 win over Dutchess Community College on April 21, 2018.
Westchester scored runs in every inning during the opener, taking a 3-0 lead after the first inning, 8-3 after two innings, and 13-5 after four innings to cruise to victory. Beehler had an incredible game, going 2 for 2 with three walks, three RBI's, and four runs scored. Sophomores
Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale HS) and
Brian McBride (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley HS) had three hits, three RBI's, and two runs scored apiece. Freshmen
Jace Deiulio (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland HS),
Luisbert Frias (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS), and
Don Hopper (Garrison, NY/Walter Panas HS) each collected two hits, with Deiulio driving in three runs and scoring twice, Frias scored twice and drove in two, and Hopper scored three times.
10 different Vikings combined for 18 hits and 11 walks, which was more than enough for sophomore
Jake Jempty (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) who improved to 3-0 for the 2020 season after allowing four earned runs over five innings, while striking out five and not walking a batter. Jempty has now walked only four batters over 18.1 innings pitched this season.
The nightcap featured far fewer fireworks, as Westchester was held to six hits and six walks, but Beehler - making his first career start - was in control from the start. He held Adirondack off of the scoreboard for the first five innings, ultimately allowing only three hits and three runs over six innings of work, striking out two batters. Westchester led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, when Adirondack rallied off of Beehler for three runs, but the Westchester bullpen stopped any further damage, with sophomore
Michael Cox (Cortland Manor, NY/Walter Panas HS) earning his first save of the season.
Freshman
Carlos Pardo (White Plains, NY/Stamford HS) went 2 for 3 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored, while sophomore
Hailyn Gonzalez (Bronx, NY/Bronx Envision Academy) reached base three times and scored twice. Deiulio went 1 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored.
Westchester Community College now has their lone off day of the Florida trip, but the Vikings return to action on Thursday, March 12 when they face Mid-Michigan Community College for a doubleheader beginning at 10:00 a.m. The games will be played in Lakeland, Florida.
