Women’s Basketball Battles Sullivan CC, Falls 83-60

Nov 19

Box Score (Loch Sheldrake, NY) - To demonstrate how far the Westchester Community College Women's Basketball team has come during a very short span, all one has to do is look at the results during the Vikings' last two trips to powerhouse Sullivan Community College. On Feb. 11, 2020 Westchester trailed 78-26 at halftime, en route to their most lop-sided loss of the season. 21 months later, the two teams met up again at SUNY Sullivan, and while the result was the same - a Sullivan win - nobody in attendance could doubt that this was a game. The Generals scored only a handful of points over four quarters than they scored during the first half of their previous encounter with Westchester, and for much of the game, the Vikings battled Sullivan CC every step. Ultimately, Sullivan came away with an 83-60 win, but for Westchester, the results was an effort that a lot can be built upon.

Playing for the first time in 11 days, the Vikings trailed 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, and 34-27 at halftime, before Sullivan (6-0, 1-0 Mid-Hudson Conference, NJCAA Region XV) gradually pulled away, leading 62-46 after three quarters, and winning the game by 23 points. But it sure wasn't easy.

Sophomore Donjeta Prelvukaj (Bronx, NY/St. Catharine) led Westchester (1-2, 0-1) with 23 points, including two long three-pointers to open the game that gave the VIikings a brief seven-point lead. Freshman Mylene Smith (Peekskill, NY/Hendrick Hudson HS) chipped in 15 points, and sophomore Diamond Williams (Yonkers, NY/Palisade Prep) added nine points.

Westchester Community College returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 20 when the Vikings travel to UConn-Avery Point for a 3:30 p.m. game.
