(Valhalla, NY) - With only second remaining in Westchester Community College's 70-57 women's basketball win over Monroe-Bronx JV on Tuesday night, freshman
Adriana McFadden (Ossining, NY/Ossining HS) made a beautiful move, drove to the basketball, and barely missed finding the bottom of the net. A basket would have given the forward the first 30-point game of her college career, and capped off the first double-double of her young college career. While the attempt at 30 points did not quite work out, it was also probably the only bad play she made the entire game. A 28-point, 10-rebound, five-steal, four-assist game later, and McFadden led the Vikings to their second win in three games, and a .500 record as Westchester CC improves to 4-4 for the 2021-2022 season.
Seven days after the Vikings edged the Express (3-4) in a hotly contested game at Monroe's home gym, Westchester used one dominant quarter to break open what was otherwise another tight game. Westchester led 15-12 after the first stanza, and after Monroe-Bronx hit a free throw seconds into the second quarter, the Vikings went on a 14-0 run to take a 29-13 lead, that turned into a 31-15 lead at halftime. McFadden had 12 points and six rebounds during the opening 20 minutes, while sophomore
Donjeta Prelvukaj (Bronx, NY/St. Catherine) scored nine points and added five rebounds and five steals during the first half of play.
Monroe made things interesting during the third quarter as the Express opened the period with a 13-3 run, and a basket with 7:22 to play trimmed the Westchester lead to 34-28. However, that was as close as the Express would come. A three-pointer by freshman
Kylee Taxiera (Ossining, NY/Ossining HS) with 6:39 to play pushed the lead back to 10 points, 38-28, and Monroe would not make it a single digit game again. The Vikings led 53-39 at the end of the third quarter, and coasted from there.
Four Vikings scored in double figures, as Prelvukaj finished with 17 points, nine steals, five assists, and four rebounds, while Taxiera added 14 points, four rebounds, and four seals. Freshman
Mylene Smith (Peekskill, NY/Hendrick Hudson HS) added 10 points, seven rebounds, and four steals.
Turnovers were the name of the game as the Vikings forced 42 Monroe-Bronx turnovers, while committing only 26, leading to a 31-12 Westchester edge in points off turnovers. Otherwise, Monroe out-rebounded Westchester 62-47, and both teams shot 33%.
Westchester Community College returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 11 when the Vikings travel to Kingsborough Community College for a 12:00 p.m. tilt.
