Brooklyn, NY- For the second time this season Westchester's Women's Volleyball team notched a victory against an opponent for the first time in over a decade. After besting perennial contender FIT earlier this fall, the Vikings took out defending Region XV Champions Queensborough on Saturday as well as besting Kingsborough in the double dual match. The win marked the first time in the last 9 regular season matchups that WCC came out on top.
The first matchup of the day was won over the Wave of Kingsborough in a straight 3 games (25-22, 25-17, 25-19). Westchester played consistently and steadily and were led by
Isabella Masucci (Valhalla, NY/Valhalla HS) who had 16 assists in the match.
Mikaelyn Hannon (Yonkers, NY/Peekskill HS) and
Gabriella Cresti Caetano (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers HS) combined for 7 kills each. The team served well notching a season high 15 services aces to help seal the win.
The next matchup proved to be a thriller. Westchester once again played well in a match that went the distance, wining for the 2nd time in the last week in games decided a 5th set. After dropping a close first game 25-27, the team fought back to win game two and three 25-22 and 25-17. Just as it looked like the Vikings seized the momentum for good. The Tigers showed why they've been atop Region XV for several years and fought back to even the match at 2 games a piece, winning game 4 25-19. Westchester then showed why they've been a team to contend with all season long as they held off Queensborough's attack and pulled away to win 15-11.
Sara Ortiz (Elmsford, NY/White Plains HS anchored the team with 22 digs and 41 serve receive passes and committed on 3 errors. Cresti Caetano had a huge impact in the middle registering 8 blocks to go with 11 kills. Hannon added 11 kills of her own and
Ireana Olivo (Yonkers, NY/Maria Regina HS) always seemed to be there when the team needed a point killing 5 balls of her own.
The wins bring the team record to 8-3 on the season. After a flurry of matches, the team has a few days off and returns to action on Saturday, October 8th as they travel to Ulster CC for their first of two matches with them this season. First serve is at 12 noon.
