Women's Basketball Kicks Off Season With Narrow Loss to #2 Hostos

November 7, 2022

Valhalla, NY – Women's Basketball opened their season this weekend, welcoming #2 in Division III, Hostos Community College, to play in the Johnny Jones Memorial Tip-Off Tournament.  Though the Vikings led for the better part of the game, Hostos pulled away late to send Westchester home with a tough 61-56 loss.

Both teams started off slow, but for much of the matchup, the they swapped scoring at an even pace, with neither squad able to build a sizable lead.  The Vikings held a slim lead at halftime 22-20.  The third quarter was much of the same as they game entered the last period 40-37, Vikings.  But in the 4th, Hostos shot 50% from the field and scored 24 points to Westchester's 16.  With just over two minutes to go, the game was tied at 51.  A 9-2 run by Caimans in just the next 45 seconds extended the lead by 7 points. A late Westchester push cut the Hostos lead to just 3 with :58 to go.  But as time would down, Westchester couldn't find the game tying score and Hostos was able to outlast them to the final buzzer.

Adriana McFadden (Ossining, NY/Ossining HS) had a game high 31 points to go with 4 steals.  Irene Maris (Bronxville, NY/Tuckahoe HS), who ran in the NJCAA Cross Country National Championships the day before, pulled down 14 rebounds.  Shanice Wilcox (New Rochelle, NY/Mt. Vernon HS) was also a presence on the boards grabbing a game high 21 boards of her own.

With the loss, the Vikings fall to 0-1 and return to action on Thursday, November 11th at 5pm when they host  (RV) Bronx Community College.
