Valhalla, NY – Women's Basketball capped off the first half of the season with a solid win over Erie Community College on Saturday, 68-53. Four Vikings players scored in double digits en route to notching a much needed win before the break.
Westchester jumped out to a commanding 17-3 lead right off the bat, holding the Kats to just 3 points in the first 10-minutes of the game. But Erie would have a big 2
nd quarter, notching 22 points to get back into the game by the half at 36-25, Vikings. By that point, the game settled in and played back and forth somewhat evenly. With 6:59 left in the period, Erie cut the lead to 4 points, the closest they had been since the first quarter, by dropping in a layup to bring the score to 36-32. Seconds later, Ariana McFadden (Ossining NY, Ossining HS) knocked down a timely 3-pointer to break the Erie run. The Vikings would pull away from there bit by bit and led the better part of the remaining time by double digits.
McFadden starred again for Westchester leading the team with 31 points, 13 rebounds, 8 steals, and 7 assists. She now sits at #2 in the country in both points scored and in steals.
Amanda Entsuah (Bronx, NY/AIM 2 Charter HS),
Mylene Smith (Peekskill, NY/Hendrick Hudson HS) and
Brianna Melo (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Community Arts and Media) all scored 10 points each to help sustain the scoring effort by Westchester.
With the win the team improves to 5-8 on the season and 1-1 within Region XV. The Vikings are now off for the winter break until January 5
th, when they'll welcome UCONN Avery Point to Viking Gymnasium to start the 2
nd half. Tip-off will be at 7pm.
