(Valhalla, NY) - Sophomore
Donjeta Prelvukaj (Bronx, NY/St. Catherine) notched a 23-point, 11-rebound double-double, and freshman
Adriana McFadden (Ossining, NY/Ossining HS) added 23 points five rebounds, and six assists, but the Westchester Community College Women's Basketball team fell to 19th-ranked Sullivan Community College, 88-70 in the 2022 NJCAA Region XV Division II Championship Game on Sunday, Feb. 27 at Westchester Community College. With the loss, the Vikings close the 2021-2022 season with an 8-7 overall record, but advanced to the Region XV Finals for the first time since 2013.
For the third time this season, the Vikings dropped a battle to Sullivan CC ... but for the third time it was not easy for the Generals (20-3). Sullivan led 23-15 after the first quarter, and 43-29 at halftime, as the Generals relied on their size advantage to nearly double up the Vikings on the boards. However, the halftime break seemed to breathe life into the Vikings as Westchester scored the first seven points of the second half to make it 43-36. Down 45-36, Westchester scored five of the next seven points to make it a 47-43 game with six minutes to play in the third quarter. Later in the third quarter, Prelvukaj hit consecutive three pointers to make it a 53-51 game with 3:29 to play. However, the Vikings would get no closer as Sullivan scored nine of the final 13 points to close the quarter with a 62-55 lead.
The fourth quarter was a completely different story as Sullivan opened the final stanza on a 12-0 run to extend the lead to 19 points, and the Vikings were simply unable to recover.
Freshman
Mylene Smith (Peekskill, NY/Hendrick Hudson HS), who earned All-Tournament honors with Prelvukaj and McFadden, scored 15 points on 6 for 12 shooting.
Size proved to make a big difference as Sullivan owned a 37-28 rebounding edge, including a 22-8 advantage on the offensive glass. The Generals also had a 25-20 edge in the turnover battle, and shot 47% from the floor, compared to 39% for the Vikings.
Despite the loss, Westchester CC continues to improve each season since basketball was re-introduced as a varsity sport for the 2017-2018 season. The 2021-2022 campaign marked the second straight season that the Vikings advanced to the NJCAA Region XV Final Four.
