Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Battles, Falls to #19 Sullivan CC

(Dobbs Ferry, NY) - Four Vikings scored in double figures, and sophomore Donjeta Prelvukaj (Bronx, NY/St. Catharine) notched her second consecutive double-double, but the Westchester Community College Women's Basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with an 80-59 loss to 19th-ranked Sullivan Community College on Thursday night at Victory Hall on the campus of Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York. With the loss, Westchester CC is now 8-5 for the 2021-2022 season, and 1-2 in the Mid-Hudson Conference and NJCAA Region XV.

Like the last time the two Region XV foes faced off - an 83-60 Sullivan win on Nov. 18, 2021 - the game was a battle, with the exception of the third quarter. This time around, Sullivan (17-1, 3-0) took a 31-19 lead after the first quarter, but Westchester outscored the Generals 19-14 during the second quarter to make it a 45-38 game at halftime.

Sullivan, however, came out fast during the third quarter, going on a 20-4 run over the first 7:51 to extend the lead to 23 points, and all but put the game away. An inspired fourth quarter for the Vikings made the game closer to the finish.

Prelvukaj was outstanding once again, scoring 10 points, while adding 16 rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Freshman Kylee Taxiera (Ossining, NY/Ossining HS) led all scorers with 22 points, and added four steals and three assists, while freshman Mylene Smith (Peekskill, NY/Hendrick Hudson HS) had 15 points and five rebounds.

Also for Westchester, freshman Adriana McFadden (Ossining, NY/Ossining HS) had an outstanding all-around game with 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

Both teams struggled to find a shooting rhythm as Sullivan shot 39% for the game, with Westchester shooting 32%, but the Generals had a 66-43 rebounding edge, including a 22-9 advantage on the offensive glass. Westchester also committed 28 turnovers, compared to 22 for Sullivan.

Westchester CC returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 10 when the Vikings host Essex County College at 5:00 p.m.
