(Newton, NJ) - Regardless of how the 2022 Baseball season will end for Westchester Community College freshman
Luisbert Frias (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester) the string of games he has put together during the middle of March will almost certainly be remembered as a highlight. To hit .500 for any stretch of a baseball season, is an extraordinary accomplishment at any level of the sport. To do so over a six-game stretch is downright sensational. With a 3 for 6 (.500) performance against Sussex County Community College on Tuesday, Frias is now 12 for his last 24 (.500) during Westchester's last six games. And, with the Vikings' 10-7 come-from-behind victory over the Skylanders, Westchester has now won four straight games to improve to 8-7 for the 2022 campaign.
The win was in no way a guarantee for much of the contest as Sussex (6-10) scored a run during the bottom of the first inning, and three more during the bottom of the sixth inning to take what seemed like a commanding 4-0 lead. However, scored six times during the seventh inning and four more times an inning later to take the lead for good.
The win was achieved by small ball. Of the 10 Westchester runs, nine were single RBI plays. During the sixth inning, much of the damage was done with the bases loaded. After freshman
Weston Baronian (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley HS) singled home
Ryan Osso (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester HS) to make it 4-1, a walk loaded the bases. From there,
Don Hopper (Garrison, NY/Walter Panas HS) singled home Frias to make it 4-2. A
Patrick Poggi (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Briarcliff HS) walk drove in a run to make it 4-3.
CJ Spence (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon HS) was then hit by a pitch to drive in a run and tie the score. A
Jace Deiulio (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland HS) fielder's choice scored a run to give Westchester a 5-4 lead, that would extend to 6-4 before the inning ended.
The eighth inning was eerily similar as Frias and Baronian reached base, before a a Hopper single loaded the bases. With two outs, a wild pitch brought home Frias to make it 7-4. Spence was hit by another pitch to load the bases, and was followed by a Deiulio walk to bring home Baronian to make it an 8-4 game. Freshman
Michael Ambrosecchia (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) then singled home Hopper and Spence for a 10-4 lead.
Hopper and Ambrosecchia finished with two hits apiece, while Deiulio and Ambrosecchia each drove in a pair of runs. Frias, Baronian, Hopper, and Spence each scored twice.
Freshman
Amolk Bhangu (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington HS) gave Westchester another quality start, allowing four runs over 5.1 innings, striking out six, while walking only three. He allowed three runs during the sixth inning, and was replaced by freshman
Alvy Grullon (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) who did not allow a run, and earned his first career win. Also for Westchester, freshman
Thomas Mark (Patterson, NY/Brewster HS) was outstanding during two innings of relief, as he did not allow a run, striking out three.
Westchester CC returns to action on Thursday, March 24 when the Vikings travel to County College of Morris for a 3:30 p.m. single game. The Vikings defeated CCM in dramatic fashion, 5-4 on March 10 at home.
