Valhalla, NY – Sunday saw the Vikings win the regular season Mid-Hudson Conference Championship and lock in the number one seed for the upcoming Region 15 Tournament with a 16-6 win over SUNY Orange.
On a day where Westchester honored 13 sophomores for their two, some three, year commitment to the program, SUNY WCC scored 12 runs over the first four innings of play and were able to coast from there. The Vikings offense pounded out 22 hits while striking out only twice. The offense was led by freshman
Tommy Poggi (Briarcliff HS/Briarcliff, NY) who had a four-hit, four RBI performance.
Luisbert Frias (Port Chester HS/Port Chester, NY) and
Weston Baronian (Pascack Valley HS/River Vale, NJ) both had a three-hit, two RBI performance at the plate.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Thomas Mark (Brewster HS/Patterson, NY) had one of his best outings all season, picking up his fifth win of the season throwing five innings of one hit ball, one earned run, and four strikeouts. Mark, would have a perfect game going until the fifth inning where he ultimately lost it walking the second batter of the inning. The play of the year would happen with the first batter of the inning. Colt batter Joe Castellanos hit a long fly ball into deep center over the head of
Gavin Carlucci (Walter Panas HS/Garrison, NY). Carlucci, channeling his inner Willie Mays, would make an incredible over the shoulder grab to preserve Mark's perfect game in-front of the 400-foot sign.
The Vikings open the Region 15 tournament on Thursday May 11
th as they host the fourth seeded Falcons of Dutchess Community College. First pitch is slated for 3:30pm right here at Vikings Field.
