Game 1 –
SUNY Westchester 10 –
Mercer College 9
Michael Dawson got the ball for Westchester and gutted out 7 innings of work. He gave up 4 earned runs but also struck out 7 to keep the team in it. The Vikings fell behind 4-1 after 3 innings and the team kept scratching to make it closer. In the bottom of the 7
th inning, Westchester trailed 6-4 and plated 3 runs to take the lead. But Mercer came right back scoring 3 in the top of the 8
th to take the lead at 9-7.
The Vikings answered with 3 more runs of their own to control the game for good at 10-9.
AJ Falciglia came in the top of the 9
th to slam the door and preserve the win for the Vikings.
Falciglia went 3 for 5 at the plate scoring 3 runs and knocking in a run.
Mike Tiseo was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI's and a run scored.
Nick Vendola was 4-5 with a run scored and 3 RBIs.
Game 2 –
SUNY Westchester 17 –
UCONN Avery Point 7
After their win on Thursday, the Vikings moved on to play the winner of Game 2 where UCONN Avery point previously beat SUNY Sullivan 8-0. After both teams exchanged 3 runs in the first inning, the Vikings led 12-3 by the 3
rd. They extended their lead to 17-7 by the 4
th and were able to hold the lead at 10 to win by the run rule.
Marc Stockhausen was 2 for 3 with a stolen base, 3 RBI's and 3 runs scored.
Mike Tiseo stayed hot going 2 for 3 with 3 RBI's and a run scored.
Brandon Hernandez was 1 for 2 with a stolen base 2 RBI's and a run scored.
Mike Kocovic was 1 for 1 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's to go with 2 walks and 2 stolen bases.
Jackson Kossow struggled a bit giving up a season high 7 runs but was steady enough to keep the Pointers at bay so that the team could win in 5 innings. The Region Pitcher of the Year struck out 7 in his outing.
Game 3 –
SUNY Westchester 9 –
UCONN Avery Point 5
After UCONN Avery Point bested SUNY Sullivan in Game 4, the Vikings faced them again in the Championship round. Westchester jumped out to and early 6-1 lead in the first inning but struggled to score to extend the lead any further. Avery Point edged closer with a run in the 5
th but starter
Wyatt Triestman held strong and gave up nothing more in his 7 innings of work. He only gave up 4 hits while striking out 9 batters in route to one of his strongest outings this year when it mattered most.
UCONN made a late run in the 8
th inning though. While the Vikings entered the frame leading 8-2, the Pointers plated 3 runs and had runners on with 2 hours when it was Falciglia again to turn them away to end the threat. Westchester added an insurance run before Falciglia finished off the game with a 1-2-3 inning to earn his 2
nd Save of the tournament and send WCC to Oklahoma.
On the offensive side,
Gavin Carlucci was 1 for 3 with a stolen base, 2 runs scored and an RBI.
Marc Stockhausen was 2 for 2 with 2 runs and an RBI.
Nick Vendola was 1 for 2 with 2 runs and an RBI. Carlucci, Stockhausen and Vendola each walked 3 times to help the Viking attack.
With their East District Victory, the Vikings advance to the NJCAA Division II World Series which will be held in Enid, Oklahoma. It marks the 3rd time in program history that the Baseball team has advanced to the World Series. It is the program's second time within Division II and the first time since 2014. WCC likely will play their first-round game on Saturday, May 25
