Viking’s Split Johnny Jones Memorial Tournament

Nov 4

Valhalla, NY - Saturday November 1st marked the start of the season for the Viking's as they once again began their quest to get back to the top of region 15 after losing in the final last year.

They opened up against The Wild Cats from Allegheny County and it was an intense game late.

The Vikings got off to a great start in the first half going up by double digits but in a game where 91 free throws were taken the men dug themselves a hole and found themselves down at the half. The woes would continue as at one point in the 2nd half they were down by more than 20

Like many Westchester teams this year with about 11 minutes to go the Vikings would begin to mount an unbelievable comeback. All game 1st year head coach Stephen Allen tried to find a lineup that worked and these kids worked their tails off cutting a 20 plus point deficit down to 2 at one point. Unfortunately they fell just short at the end losing by 4 in a heroic comeback effort. Sophomores Tiziah Spears and Fari Joseph(Bronx, NY) had great first games for the Vikings despite the loss. Joseph had 20 and Spears had 17.

The men had to have a short memory as the next day they would take on Roxbury Community College who had just beat Hostos in the tournament the day before. The men would most certainly bounce back. They controlled the game throughout. The Vikings survived a small run in which Roxbury had cut it to 5 but would close the game out strong.  They ended up winning 84-73.

The tournament MVP for the men went to Fari Joseph as he had an outstanding opening weekend for the Vikings scoring 37 in the two combined games. The other all tournament award went to Tiziah Spears who also had a strong showing for the Vikings in his first 2 games.

Congratulations to Coach Stephen Allen on his first win as the head coach for the Vikings.

The Men will be back in action This Thursday as they take on Essex County College at 7PM home in the Viking Gymnasium.
