The Vikings came into day three of the RussMatt tournament hoping to keep up with their string of victories. Unfortunately, after facing Genesee Community College and University of Connecticut at Avery Point, they fell short.
In their first game of the day against Genesee Community College, the first team to score was Westchester in the bottom of the second where they earned themselves two runs. Genesee quickly came back with a run for themselves. When the Vikings were up at bat again, they added another two runs to the scoreboard, making the score 4-1. Eager to take the lead, Genesee continued to make hits, earning themselves another six points to make the final score, 7-4, ending Westchester's winning streak. Sophomore, Nick Vendola, was 2 for 2 with an RBI, while Peter Portugues was 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Michael Tiseo also went 1 for 4 with an RBI.
Later in the day, the Vikings played University of Connecticut at Avery Point. It was a fast start with both teams scoring two runs each in the first inning. Attempting to get ahead, Westchester scored three more runs in the second. UCAP quickly reacted with two runs of their own. The Vikings were up by one entering the fifth, where UCAP tied it up. At the plate, Joseph Cohen scored a HR in the top of the sixth, giving the Vikings the lead once again. Things changed in the bottom of the sixth, as UCAP would score four runs, and WCC could only respond with one final run in the last inning. The final score was close, but ultimately WCC fell short with a score of 9-7. Nick Vendola went 2 for 2, while the following Vikings each earned a run: Freddy Heymach, Peter Portugues, Joseph Cohen, Ryan Done, and Tristan Paredes.
The Vikings will have a much needed day off and will continue in the tournament on Thursday, March 20th where they will play Holyoke Community College in a doubleheader at 9AM and 11:30AM.
