Valhalla, NY - Even with impending snow this weekend and snow still on the ground from the last storm that didn't stop the Westchester Community College Men's Baseball Team from getting their season underway. They took their classic early season trip up to Maryland this weekend. Originally planned for 4 games against Cecil they schedule would be a little different this year with the incoming snow. They would open with a double header at Harford Community College. Game 1 was against Erie Community College and Game 2 was against Cecil.
Â
Westchester would drop game 1 9-4 to the Cats from Erie Community College. Walks were without a doubt the story of the game. Erie was able to capitalise early on the free passes where WCC did not. Both teams would amass runs in the first three innings but it would be the Cats who did more damage and would take the opening day win 9-4. There were some bright spots in the win for the Vikings. After a great freshman season, Freddy Heymach(Pawling,NY/Pawling High School) would look to start his sophomore campaign strong and he did just that. He went 2 for 3 with a walk in game 1. Freshmen Mercer Jordan(Beacon,NY/Beacon High School) would have a great first game. He would not only collect his first hit but also crush his first home run for the Vikings.Â
Â
Game 2 was against Cecil Community College. It was dominated by their pitching and they won in 5 innings vs the Vikings. Heymach hit a solo homerun during the loss. Congratulations to three freshmen John Avellino(New Rochelle,NY/Salesian High School), Austin Jorgenson(Poughkeepsie, NY/Our Lady Of Lourdes High School) and Thomas Nunziata(Somers,NY/Kennedy Catholic High School) for collecting their first collegiate hits.Â
