In a game where every pitch carried weight and every mistake loomed large, the Westchester CC Vikings delivered in the clutch, holding off UConn Avery Point for a gritty 2–1 victory on Saturday.
This was baseball at its purest—dominant arms, airtight defense, and a single moment swinging the outcome.
Westchester broke through first in the third inning, capitalizing on pressure and precision. With tension building, Freddy Heymach(Pawling, NY/Pawling High School) would score on a passed ball allowing the game's opening run to cross the plate, igniting the Vikings' dugout and setting the tone for a tightly contested afternoon.
From there, the spotlight belonged to Vasili Kelesidis(Stamford CT, Stamford High School).
The right-hander was in complete control, carving through the UConn Avery Point lineup with poise and confidence. Working six innings, Kelesidis allowed just one run on five hits while striking out five. More importantly, he delivered when it mattered most—escaping jams, limiting damage, and recording 18 critical outs to anchor the Vikings' effort.
But Westchester's staff refused to bend late.
With the game hanging in the balance, Christian Peralta(East Elmhurst, NY/Christ The King) took over and slammed the door. The reliever fired a scoreless inning, allowing no hits while striking out one to secure the victory and silence any hopes of a late rally.
Offensively, Heymach set the tone at the top, going 2-for-3 and consistently applying pressure on the basepaths. While runs were at a premium, execution proved to be the difference.
Defensively, the Vikings were flawless. They turned a key double play and played error-free baseball behind their pitchers.
UConn Avery Point showed resilience throughout. Light provided a spark from the lower half of the lineup with two hits, while Hine accounted for the team's lone RBI.
But in a game defined by inches, Westchester seized its opportunity—and never let go.
In the end, it wasn't about overpowering offense. It was about execution, composure, and one team making just enough plays to win.
Game 2 was another exciting low scoring affair that this time the Huskies edged out the Vikings.
Westchester CC Vikings got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning after Jason Jackson(Arlington High School) doubled down the left field line scoring 1, and he would later score on a passed ball.
UConn Avery Point jumped back into the lead in the top of the seventh inning after Westchester CC Vikings committed an error, and Russo hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run. This would ultimately lead to a win for the Huskies as WCC couldn't rally.Â
Reilly Deneen(North Salem,NY/North Salem High School) started on the mound for Westchester CC Vikings. The hurler surrendered four hits and three runs (one earned) over six and one-third innings, striking out three and walking two.Â
It was a tough loss for the Vikings but they still took the season series against UConn Avery Point, 2-1.
The Vikings will be back in action this Tuesday as they take on Manhattanville University JV. First Pitch will be at 3:30 PM at Vikings Field. Come out and support! Â
