Men's Basketball Dominates Dutchess; 119-82 for Eighth Straight Win

Nov 30

Box Score (Valhalla, NY) - Six Vikings scored in double figures, led by a 20-point effort for sophomore Randy Stephens, as the Westchester Community College Men's Basketball team continued its incredible run to open the 2017-18 season, winning their eighth-straight game, 119-82 over visiting Dutchess Community College on Thursday night at Viking Gymnasium. The 119 points marked a season-high for WCC, breaking their 115 total during a win over Rockland Community College nine days ago.

It was a slow start for both teams after a long layoff due to the Thanksgiving holiday, as both squads missed multiple scoring chances early, and there were several turnovers to start the game. Dutchess (2-7) took a 12-10 lead with 16 minutes remaining in the first half, when sophomore Brandon Martin entered the game, and changed things immediately. The forward scored six straight points on his own, leading the Vikings on an 18-4 run to blow the game open, giving Westchester a 30-14 lead. From there, the Vikings cruised to win #8, leading 54-31 at halftime. After some back-and-forth to open the second half, a 12-2 run increased the Westchester lead to 73-48 with 14:45 to play, and the rout was on ... again.

Martin finished with 18 points, as did Raykwon Fenton, while Tremaine Fraiser added 14 points. Also hitting double digits for WCC were Maxx Miller (12 points), and Gabriel Cruz (11 points).

WCC broke 100 points for the third time this season, and the Vikings are now averaging 96.8 points per game on the year.

The win sets up a showdown with Ulster Community College on Tuesday, Dec. 5 which will determine first place in both the Mid Hudson Conference and Region XV as both teams enter the game undefeated in region and in conference play. The match-up will take place in Viking Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
