Cruz Control: Sophomore’s career-best night leads Men’s Basketball past SUNY Orange

Jan 23

Box Score (Middletown, NY) - Sophomore Gabriel Cruz (Bronx, NY/In-Tech Academy) scored a career-high 20 points, including a pivotal 12 during the second half, and five Vikings scored in double figures, as the Westchester Community College Men's Basketball team downed SUNY Orange for the second time this season, 98-85 on Tuesday night at SUNY Orange. With the win, Westchester Community College has still not been outscored by an opponent during 16 games this season.

It was a much closer affair than WCC's 126-80 win over the Colts on Dec. 7, as the hosts battled WCC for much of the first half. WCC opened up an early four-point lead, but the Colts hung tough for the entirety of the opening 20 minutes, trailing WCC 43-36 at the break. Eight different Vikings scored during the opening half, led by Raykwon Fenton (Bronx, NY/Holcombe Rucker HS), who had nine points during the first half.

The second half saw WCC open things up. A Cruz three-pointer with 16:31 remaining gave the Vikings a 54-39 lead, and WCC went up by as many as 25 points, 73-48 with just over 11 minutes remaining. From there, Westchester coasted to victory once again.

Tremaine Fraiser (Port Chester, NY/Trinity Catholic) led the Vikings with 22 points, Max Miller (White Plains, NY/Mount Saint Michael) chipped in 20 points of his own, and Fenton added 16 points of his own.

Westchester CC returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 25 when the Vikings travel to Riverdale, New York to face the College of Mount Saint Vincent JV team. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
