(Loch Sheldrake, NY) - Freshman
Joe Zayer (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South HS) scored a team-high 21 points to go with five rebounds and five assists, and sophomore
Miles Haughton (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck HS) notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, but the Westchester Community College Men's Basketball team closed out the 2018 portion of their schedule with an 84-67 loss to Sullivan Community College on Thursday night at SUNY Sullivan. With the loss, the Vikings enter 2019 with an 8-4 overall record, a 3-2 ledger in Mid-Hudson Conference play, and a 2-2 mark against NJCAA Region XV competition.
The game was a tale of two halves as Sullivan (8-3, 2-0 Mid-Hudson Conference, 2-0 Region XV) stormed out to a fast 10-4 lead, before Westchester chipped away at the deficit. With eight minutes remaining in the opening half, a
Fabian Johnson (New York, NY/Our Savior Lutheran) tied the game at 19-19, and two minutes later, a Zayer three-pointer gave the Vikings their first lead of the game, 26-24. Sullivan took a 33-31 lead as the final seconds ticked down in the first half, but a buzzer-beating lay-up by sophomore
Jon Brennan (Irvington, NY/Iona Prep) tied the game at 33 heading into halftime.
However, after a Haughton dunk tied the game at 35 early in the second half, the Generals went on a big run to take a 14-point lead, and force the Vikings to play catch-up for the rest of the game. Westchester brought it back to as close as a 10-point deficit, but that was as close as the Vikings would get.
Also having a big game for Westchester was sophomore
Maurice Hollis (Bronx, NY/Tuckahoe HS), who capped off a tremendous week with a 10-point effort, while freshman
Robert Pope (Bronx, NY/Lehman HS) added 10 rebounds.
