Vikings Suffer First Loss of Season in Double Overtime

September 11, 2018 - Valhalla, NY

The men's soccer team fell for the first time in the 2018 campaign as Queensborough converted on a scoring chance four minutes into the second overtime period, handing the Vikings a stunning 1-0 loss.

WCC controlled the ball for much of the first half but was unable to breakthrough on the few scoring opportunities that the team created for themselves.  While the Vikings played much of the first half in the offensive zone, their defense limited QCC's opportunities as well.  Freshman goalkeeper Guilherme Griza (Novo Hamburgo-RS (Brazil)/Colegio Marista Pio XII) kept the Tigers off the board all game long with 9 total saves but it was the second half that he really came through for WCC.  In the 65th minute, QCC had a golden opportunity to take the lead on a penalty kick but Griza stood tall making an outstanding save to his left to extinguish the threat.  In the final minutes of regulation he also turned away a bouncing shot that had a chance to help the Vikings force overtime.

As the game wore on Westchester found themselves on their heals defending against the Tiger surges.   After holding steady for much of the extra time, QCC was finally able to make a crossing pass across the front of the net to be redirected in by the striker.

With the loss WCC falls to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 within Region XV.  The team returns to action on Friday, September 14th as they travel to Poughkeepsie, NY to take on Dutchess Community College at 7:30 pm at Our Lady of Lourdes HS.
