(Brooklyn, NY) - Down 2-0 to Kingsborough Community College, and facing a loss that would have been devastating as the Vikings attempt to qualify for the Region XV playoffs for the first time in three seasons, the Westchester Community College Women's Volleyball team needed an effort not yet seen this season to mount the comeback of the year.
Fortunately for WCC, freshman
Esther Uddoh (Yonkers, NY/Gorton HS) was up for the task, providing the Vikings with the very effort they needed, and Westchester CC came home with its biggest - and most exciting - win of the 2018 campaign.
The freshman amassed six blocks, five digs, and offered a series of serves that scored WCC points as the Vikings completed the comeback, 3-2 over the host Wave on Saturday afternoon. Kingsborough opened the match with 21-25 and 17-25 wins, before WCC rallied for the 26-24, 25-15, and 15-5 victory. The triumph was Westchester CC's eighth of the 2018 season, eclipsing their 2017 win total.
The match was also Westchester's fourth five-set contest of the 2018 season, and their second straight.
Sophomore
Lindsay Leggio (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) notched her third straight double-double with 29 assists and 12 digs, while fellow sophomore
Madison Young (Greenburgh, NY/Woodlands HS) added 22 kills, six blocks, and two digs. Also for the Vikings, sophomore
Taylor Mello (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Putnam Valley HS) just barely missed a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs, while
Alysha Owens (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon HS) added seven kills and 14 digs.
The second contest of the double-dual featured Westchester against Region XV powerhouse Queensborough Community College, a match the Vikings dropped 3-0 to fall to 8-5 for the 2018 season, and 8-4 in Region XV competition.
Queensborough, who entered the day undefeated for the 2018 season, won the match 25-16, 25-18, and 25-12.
Young had 10 kills to go with two digs, Leggio added 12 assists, and Young amassed three kills and six digs. Also for WCC, Owens had four kills and three digs.
Westchester returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 2 when the Vikings travel to Dutchess Community College for a 7:00 p.m. match. The Vikings defeated Dutchess 3-2 on Sept. 15.
