(New Rochelle, NY) - Freshman
Jewelle McEwen (Bronx, NY/Harry S. Truman HS) scored a career-high 25 points to go with seven rebounds, and sophomore
Paige Collins (Jamaica, NY/Wadleigh HS) added 12 points and 10 rebounds, but the Westchester Community College Women's Basketball team lost a 74-68 battle to Monroe-Bronx College on Thursday night in New Rochelle, New York. With the loss, the Vikings fall to 2-3 for the 2018-19 season.
It was a battle from start to finish during 40 minutes of basketball that featured five ties and an incredible 12 lead changes, but it did not appear to be a battle during the early going. Monroe (9-14) opened the game on an 8-0 run, and led 12-2 with 5:37 to play in the opening stanza before an 11-0 Viking run made it an 18-17 game to end the first quarter. A tight second quarter finished with Monroe grabbing a 41-38 lead at halftime.
An 11-3 run to open the fourth quarter seemed to give the Express the cushion they needed to end the game, but a late 12-4 WCC run made things interesting, but the comeback could not be completed.
Six Vikings scored during the game as
Chynna Mincey (Bronx, NY/Business of Sports HS) had nine points and eight rebounds,
Shanaya Jones (Bronx, NY/Health Opportunities HS) chipped in eight points and 15 rebounds, and
Jada Tom (Elmsford, NY/Alexander Hamilton HS) added eight points as well.
Westchester grabbed 58 rebounds, compared to Monroe's 52, but the hosts shot 47%, compared to Westchester's 31%.
Westchester returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 2 when the Vikings travel to Luzerne County Community College for a 2:00 p.m. game.
