(Valhalla, NY) - When it is playoff soccer, and it is an evenly played game, if the game is going to end in regulation, it is usually a 'bang-bang' kind of play that will determine who advances and who goes home. And as the final minutes of Saturday's NJCAA Region XV Quarterfinal match-up between Westchester Community College and Monroe College - Bronx ticked down, it was exactly that kind of play that determined the winner. Unfortunately for the Westchester CC Men's Soccer team, it was the visiting Express to make the winning play. In the 83rd minute, Monroe's Jean Woobens Zamy fired a crossing pass to the middle of the box, and Emerson Guevara one-timed a kick into the back of the Viking net for a 1-0 lead that became a 1-0 final at Westchester CC's Barrett Field, sending Monroe to the Region XV Semifinals for the first time, ever.
With the loss, an outstanding season comes to an end for Westchester CC as the Vikings finish with a 10-4 record.
It was a game controlled by both team's midfields from the start as scoring chances were limited during a contest that saw 22 combined shots. During the first half of play, Westchester's
Tyrone Malango (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS) and Jason Almedia Da Cruz (
Yonkers, NY Escola Secundaria Olavo Moniz (Cape Verde) both had golden scoring opportunities, but both were denied. The Express had one open scoring opportunity late during the opening 45 minutes, but a diving stop by sophomore
Guilherme Griza (N
ovo Hamburgo-RS (Brazil) Colegio Marista Pio XII) kept the score at 0-0 into halftime.
The second half saw much of the same as after both teams saw chances early, the defenses tightened up. That is, until the Express scored the winning goal with just under seven minutes remaining. Westchester had one final scoring opportunity as freshman
Tuane Tapper (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon HS) fired a rocket from the left side across the cage that missed the far post by mere inches with just under three minutes remaining. From there, Monroe was able to exhaust the clock, and advance to face the winner of the Nassau CC-Kingsborough CC Quarterfinal to be played later Saturday afternoon.
Westchester out-shot the Express 12-10, and took seven corner kicks, compared to Monroe's four.
The loss marks the end of the 2019 season, and the final game for the career of 10 Viking sophomores, most of which will seek opportunities to compete at four-year schools next season.
