(North East, MD) - As a young Westchester Community College Men's Basketball team works together to forge an identity for the 2019-2020 season, this weekend's events at the Cecil College Mixer may prove to be the story. This is a team that goes after opponents head-on, that has a lot of weapons, and that will not back down from a challenge. Less than 24 hours after a disappointing 92-86 loss to host Cecil College that saw the Vikings lead most of the way before falling late, Westchester faced its first NJCAA Division I opponent of the campaign on Sunday, and came home with the most resounding of victories.
Freshman
Noe Fleurimond (Greenburgh, NY/Woodlands HS) slammed home a thunderous dunk with 11 seconds to play in overtime as part of a 14-point day, and fellow freshman
Malik Moore (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS) chipped in a team-high 17 points, including a buzzer-beating basket at the end of regulation to force overtime, as Westchester CC downed Division I Allegany Community College 94-93 in overtime on Sunday. With the win, the Vikings are now 6-2 for the 2019-2020 season.
Four Vikings scored in double figures, including
Justin Mazyck (Bronx, NY/Stevenson HS), who scored 15 points, while freshman
Daniel Barrera (Elmsford, NY/Alexander Hamilton HS), who added 13 points. Also for the Vikings, sophomore
Anthony Serrano (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet HS), who scored a season-high nine points, and enjoyed an outstanding all-around game.
The win comes a day after the Vikings built up a 16-point lead during the first half against an outstanding Cecil College team, before the Seahawks rallied for a 92-86 win. Mazyck and sophomore
Joe Zayer (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South HS) scored 19 points apiece, while Moore added 16 points, and Barrera added 12.
Westchester Community College returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 19 when the Vikings travel to Orange Community College for a 7:00 p.m. start. The game will be the Region XV opener for the Vikings.
