(Stone Ridge, NY) - What a difference a year makes. One year ago, when the Westchester Community College Women's Basketball team faced Ulster CC for the first of two Region XV match-ups, a 27-point Viking defeat marked perhaps the low point for a program very much in building mode. One year later, the opening class of the 2019-2020 season for these two programs placed on full display exactly how far the Vikings have come. Freshman
Donjeta Prelvukaj (Bronx, NY/St. Catharine) scored 21 points, 14 of which came during a spectacular first half, and fellow freshman
Jailine Ruiz (Bronx, NY/Bryant HS) scored 22 points as the Vikings led wire-to-wire during a 66-42 win over the Senators at Ulster Community College.
With their third straight win, Westchester is now 6-6 overall, and 3-0 in NJCAA Region XV play. After a 1-5 start, Westchester has now reached .500.
Ruiz notched a double-double, adding 11 steals to her 22-point effort and also chipping in five rebounds and five assists, while Prelvukaj barely missed a triple-double, adding nine rebounds and seven steals to her evening.
Westchester led 19-12 after the first quarter, 40-24 at halftime, and allowed a season-low six points while extending the lead to 53-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
Also for Westchester, freshman
Tina Fabrizi (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck HS) scored 11 points and had seven rebounds, while
Bria Lockley (Yonkers, NY/HS For Teaching & Professions) added 10 points and five steals.
Westchester CC returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 14 when the Vikings host 2019 NJCAA Region XV Champion Sullivan Community College at 1:00 p.m.
