Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

The Moore The Merrier: Men's Basketball Stuns #3 Sullivan CC Behind Freshman's Career-High 23 Points

(Valhalla, NY) - After a 10-1 start to the 2019-2020 season that included multiple victories over nationally elite programs, an eight-game winning streak, and a national ranking of #3 in the nation, the Sullivan Community College Men's Basketball team entered Saturday's showdown with Westchester Community College as a legitimate contender for a Division II National Championship once March rolls around. 40 minutes later, if a conversation will be held regarding who are the best teams in the country this season, Westchester CC's name is firmly a part of the conversation. Freshman Malik Moore (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS) scored a career-high 23 points, and added five rebounds and three assists, and fellow freshman Justin Mazyck (Bronx, NY/Stevenson HS) notched a double-double with 16 points, and 11 rebounds as the Vikings scored perhaps the biggest upset in the NJCAA this season, 70-61 over the visiting Generals.

With the win, Westchester is now 11-4 overall, and 3-1 in both Region XV and Mid-Hudson Conference play.

While entering the game as significant underdogs, Westchester proved to be ready to play from the start, as Mazyck nailed a three-pointer 13 seconds into the game to make it 3-0. While both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm early, the Vikings methodically pulled ahead, scoring eight straight points to take a 13-5 lead after a Mazyck basket with 13:52 to play in the first half. Later in the half, off of an inbounds pass, Moore found freshman Dimaunie Meredith (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Dobbs Ferry HS) with a perfect lob pass that became an alley-oop to give WCC a 19-11 lead with 9:08 to play.

However, from there, Sullivan fought back. A 13-5 General run tied the score at 24 with 3:06 to play in the first half, and Sullivan (10-2, 3-1) ended the first half on a 15-3 run to take a 33-27 lead into the break.

Sullivan worked to put the game away quickly to open the second half as a fast break basket gave the Generals a 41-34 lead with 16:12 to play, but Westchester's energy level only increased as the second half moved along. The Vikings out-rebounded Sullivan 29-14 over the final 20 minutes, including 13-3 edge on the offensive glass, giving Westchester all of the extra possessions they would need to even the game and pull ahead.

Sophomore Anthony Monti (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond's) his a pair of free throws with 8:03 to play to complete a 16-3 Viking run, and give the hosts a 50-47 lead. Westchester would lead the rest of the way. The Vikings would hit their final nine free throws to ice the win.

Monti finished with 12 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while freshman Noe Fleurimond (Greenburgh, NY/Woodlands HS) finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Westchester won the turnover battle, committing 15, while forcing 16. Both teams struggled to shoot with Sullivan converting 38% of their shots, while Westchester made 35% of their attempts.

Perhaps the biggest stat of the game was at the free throw line, where Westchester - who has struggled at the line throughout the season - converted 15 of their 17 attempts, while Sullivan was 9 for 15 from the line.

Westchester CC returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 17 when the Vikings take to the floor for the final time in 2019, hosting Monroe College - Bronx Campus - at 7:00 p.m.
