(Pleasantville, NY) - Sophomore
Steve Guzman (Bronx, NY/John F. Kennedy HS) went 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and freshman
Hector Camacho (Harrison, NY/Harrison HS) pitched brilliantly for more than four innings, but the Westchester Community College Men's Baseball team lost for the first time this season, 12-4 to Union County College on Tuesday afternoon. The game was played at Pace University in Pleasantville, NY. With the loss, the Vikings are now 7-1 for the 2019 season.
Union dominated the first two innings, storming out of the gate for a 9-0 lead before Westchester had its second team at bat, and the early deficit proved to be too much for Westchester despite Camacho's heroics. The rookie entered the game with two outs in the top of the second inning, and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing only one run, while striking out two batter and walking only one. He gave the Vikings every opportunity to mount a comeback, but Westchester was unable to muster its first hit until there were two outs in the fifth inning. That hit, a Guzman triple, scored
Sean Vanegas (Bronx, NY/Mount St. Michael) to make it 9-1. One batter later,
CJ Spence (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon HS) singled home Guzman to make it 9-2.
Down 12-2 two innings later, Guzman came through once again, drilling a double to put runners on second and third base with one out. Vikings freshman
Jhojandy Hernandez (Bronx, NY/Salesian) then scored on a wild pitch that moved Guzman to third, and a
Steve Messerschmitt (Carmel, NY/Carmel HS) single brought Guzman home to make it the 12-4 final.
The game was ended after seven innings due to the run differential.
Aside from their struggles at the plate, Westchester had an uncharacteristically tough day on the field, allowing six unearned runs, a huge factor during an otherwise close game.
Westchester CC returns to action on Wednesday, March 20 when the Vikings travel to Bronx Community College for a 3:30 p.m. game.
