(Bayside, NY) - In the sport of Soccer, when you have a lead, there are fewer than 10 minutes remaining on the clock, and you are playing at home, the odds of your opponent coming back to win are slim to say the least. That is, unless the opponent has
Tyrone Malango (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS) on its roster.
Such was the story of the Westchester Community College Men's Soccer team on Tuesday. Playing for the first time since falling 2-1 to Monroe-Bronx one week ago, the Vikings were less than 10 minutes away from a second consecutive crushing defeat to a Region XV opponent that would have put the Vikings at 0-2 in region play to start the 2019 campaign. However, Malango, making his Westchester CC debut, not only put the game on his foot, but in many ways the early part of the season on his shoulders, and boy did he come through. The rookie scored on a penalty kick in the 81st minute, and then converted the game-winner five minutes later to give Westchester an incredible 2-1 win.
With the victory, WCC is now 2-1 for the 2019 season and 1-1 in Region XV play.
One year after Queensborough (1-2, 1-2 Region XV) defeated the Vikings in double overtime, the host Tigers seemed to be poised for a regulation victory this time around. Queensborough interrupted a barrage of Viking scoring opportunities with a goal in the 20th minute to take a 1-0 lead, and it appeared that the lead would stick, even though WCC out-shot the Tigers nearly 3-1, but squandered dozens of prime scoring opportunities.
However, in the 81st minute, Malango was pulled down in the box during a glorious scoring opportunity, and was awarded a penalty kick, which he promptly converted to tie the score 1-1. Five minutes later, freshman
Tuane Tapper (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon HS) found Malango with a gorgeous pass, and Malango scored on the opportunity to make it the 2-1 final.
The final score did not nearly reflect the play of the game as Westchester out-shot Queensborough 23-8, with most Viking shots coming from just in front of the Tiger goal, but WCC struggled to finish their chances after a week off.
Sophomore
Guilherme Griza (Novo Hamburgo-RS (Brazil)/Colegio Marsita Pio XII) stopped seven out of eight shots for his second win of the season.
Westchester returns home on Thursday, Sept. 12 when the Vikings begin their defense of the Mid-Hudson Conference Championship with a 4:00 pm tilt with Dutchess Community College. The contest will mark the opening end of a doubleheader with the Viking Volleyball team as part of 'Fear The Horn' Day.
