(Warwick, RI) - Five Vikings scored in double figures, led by sophomore
Anthony Monti (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond's), who scored a team-high 22 points, as the Westchester Community College Men's Basketball team notched its eighth straight win, 100-72 over Roxbury Community College on Sunday afternoon at the Community College of Rhode Island Tournament in Warwick, Rhode Island. With the win, Westchester is now 15-4 for the 2019-2020 season.
It was a game far closer than the final score indicated. Playing less than 24 hours after an emotional 88-87 overtime win over CCRI, Westchester struggled to find a rhythm during the early going. The Vikings trailed 12-4 with 14:31 to play in the first half and 23-17 five minutes later, but Westchester scored 13 of the next 20 points to tie the score at 30 with 7:05 to play in the half. A minute later, WCC took their first lead of the game, and Westchester would not trail again, leading 47-45 at halftime.
Westchester opened the second half on a 12-4 run to make the lead double digits. Midway through the second half, a 21-5 Viking run made it an 84-58 lead with 8:36 to play, and the Vikings cruised from there.
Freshman
Daniel Barrera (Elmsford, NY/Alexander Hamilton HS) scored 17 points, while freshman
Justyn Huger (Harlem, NY/Thurgood Marshall HS) and sophomore
Joe Zayer (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South HS) added 14 points apiece. Also for the Vikings, freshman
Malik Moore (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS) scored 10 points.
Westchester CC returns home on Thursday, Jan. 16 when the Vikings host Bronx Community College at 7:00 p.m.
