Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

A Fresh Start: Women's Basketball Opens 2020 with 107-46 win over Monroe JV

(Valhalla, NY) - If foreshadowing ever comes into account during a college basketball game, it sure reared its head during Tuesday's Women's Basketball game between Westchester Community College and Monroe College - Bronx JV. The Vikings accomplished the rare feat of holding a lead before the game even started, as freshman Tina Fabrizi (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck HS) converted one of two free throw attempts as the result of a pre-game administrative technical foul assessed to Monroe to give the Vikings a 1-0 edge before the opening tip-off. The event proved to be a sign of things to come. From there, Westchester scored the game's first 34 points over a span of 10:54, including a first quarter shutout of the Express, and led by as many as 65 points en route to a 107-46 win over Monroe at Viking Gymnasium.

With the win, Westchester CC is now 7-8 for the 2019-2020 season. The win also marked the first time since the return of Women's Basketball at Westchester Community College that the Vikings broke the 100-point mark.

During what was perhaps the best start to a game in program history, Westchester led 32-0 at the end of the opening quarter, 69-11 at halftime, and cruised during the second half as they battle to reach .500 during their first full season as a varsity program since a three-year hiatus.

Sophomore Jada Tom (Elmsford, NY/Alexander Hamilton HS) enjoyed the finest game of her career, scoring 27 points, while adding six steals and three assists. Included in her effort was a 26-point, four-steal first half. Also for the Vikings, freshman Donjeta Prelvukaj (Bronx, NY/St. Catharine) led all scorers with 33 points, while adding eight rebounds, eight assists, and six steals. She enjoyed a 5 for 9 effort from three-point range.

WCC also had double-digit scoring from freshman Jailine Ruiz (Bronx, NY/Bryant HS), who had 19 points to go with seven assists, and six rebounds, while Fabrizi scored 18 points - on 8 for 9 shooting - and added seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

For the game, Westchester shot 55%, compared to 33% for Monroe, while the Vikings also enjoyed a 41-33 advantage in rebounds, and a 39-10 edge in turnovers.

Westchester Community College will look to get to .500 for the season when they host Bronx Community College on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 5:00 p.m.
