Mid-Hudson Conference Men's Soccer Championship Game: Westchester CC Falls to Ulster CC in Overtime

(Accord, NY) - For the first time in seven years, there is a Mid-Hudson Conference Men's Soccer Champion that is not Westchester Community College. Ulster Community College's Jesus Martinez blasted an outside shot past Westchester CC Goalkeeper Brian Guaman (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) five minutes into the first overtime period to give the host Senators a 3-2 win, breaking Westchester's streak of five straight conference championships. With the loss, the Vikings are now 5-6 for the 2021 season.

It was everything the Mid-Hudson Conference could have asked for in a championship game as two evenly matched teams engaged in quite the slugfest over the 95 minutes of action. Westchester opened the scoring in the 30th minute when freshman Jonathan Calpeno (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) found sophomore Tobe Obealor (Hartsdale, NY/Woodlands HS) with a crossing pass that Obealor deposited in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The goal marked the first time this season that any Mid-Hudson Conference team had scored on Ulster, and the first time in seven games that any team scored on the Senators. The lead stood through the end of the first half as the Vikings led 1-0 at the break.

However, the second half proved to be a wild affair. Ulster (9-2) tied things on an outside shot three minutes into the second half, and for nearly 30 minutes, the two teams traded scoring opportunities back and forth. In the 75th minute, freshman Andrew Huyhua (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) received a pass from sophomore Juan Torres (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle HS), and blasted a shot into the net for a 2-1 Vikings lead.

However, that lead was as short-lived as they come. On the ensuing kickoff, Ulster's Martinez blasted a shot from the center dot that somehow found its way into the net to tie the game, only seconds after the Vikings took the lead. The goal set off a wild finish that saw both teams do everything they could to win the championship in regulation. However, the game entered overtime, where the Senators earned their first Mid-Hudson Conference crown since 2012.

Both teams finished with 19 shots, while Westchester took six corner kicks, compared to Ulster's four. Guaman finished with nine saves for the Vikings

The Vikings now enter the 2021 NJCAA Region XV Championship Tournament as the #6 seed. They travel to face third-seeded Suffolk Community College on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
