(Valhalla, NY) - Faced with one final regular season game on the home pitch to make an impression, Westchester Community College Men's Soccer sophomore
Tobe Obealor (Hartsdale, NY/Woodlands HS) not only left one final stamp on a strong Viking career, but he accomplished more during the first 12 minutes of play of his first career start than many players do during an entire season. The speedy forward scored twice during the first 7:24, and then added an assist less than five minutes later to blow the game wide open, as Westchester CC earned its third straight win, 6-1 over Rockland Community College on Wednesday afternoon at Barrett Field.
With the win, Westchester is now 5-3 overall and in NJCAA Region XV play, and 3-0 in the Mid-Hudson Conference as the Vikings won their 25th straight Conference Game. The win also assures the Vikings of a spot in the Mid-Hudson Conference Championship Game as they seek their sixth consecutive crown. The winner of Saturday's match-up between Westchester CC and Ulster Community College will host the Championship Game during a date and time to be determined.
Westchester has now outscored opponents 27-1 during their last three games.
Prior to the game, Obealor,
Juan Torres (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle HS) and
Robert McDonald (Bronx, NY/Glenmuir) were honored for their achievements during two seasons as Vikings.
Obealor was virtually unstoppable from the start, scoring a beautiful unassisted goal at 3:18 for a 1-0 lead. Just over four minutes later, freshman
Oscar Umanzor (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) found Obealor in transition, and the speedy forward took care of the rest, scoring at 7:24 to make it 2-0. Obealor made it a five-point game at 12:15, crossing a pass to freshman
Bayron Goff (Wappingers Falls, NY/Roosevelt HS), who scored his fourth goal of the season to make it a 3-0 game, and all but put Rockland CC away.
Obealor desperately tried to complete the hat trick during the first half of play, but several breakaway attempts were stopped by Rockland Goalkeeper Angel Reyes to keep Obealor from doing further damage.
A Rockland (1-5, 0-2) penalty kick was converted at 16:15 to make it a 3-1 game, but 22 minutes later, Westchester's
Alejandro Torres (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) scored on a penalty kick of his own, for his fourth goal of the season to make it 4-1. Torres then scored a spectacular goal off of a
Juan Torres pass at 58:45 to make it 5-1, and Umanzor scored his seventh goal of the season as he rifled an outside shot into the upper corner at 62:25 for the 6-1 final.
The game's statistics were not as close as the scoreboard indicated as Westchester out-shot Rockland 42-6, and had nine corner kicks to Rockland's single attempt. Reyes made 13 saves, several of which were spectacular, otherwise the Vikings could have gotten the game into double digits for the second straight outing.
The Vikings and Ulster will meet on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Rondout Valley High School in Accord, NY.
