Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong Second Half Leads Women's Basketball Past Monroe JV

(New Rochelle, NY) - Sophomore Donjeta Prelvukaj (Bronx, NY/St. Catharine) scored 12 of her game-high 21 points during the second half of play, and completed the double-double with 12 rebounds, and freshman Adriana McFadden (Ossining, NY/Ossining HS) added 19 points and seven rebounds, as the Westchester Community College Women's Basketball team won for the second time during the las three games with a 68-61 win over Monroe College JV on Thursday evening at Monroe College. With the win, the Vikings are now 3-3 overall.

The Vikings needed one of their best second halves of the 2021-2022 season to notch the win as Westchester trailed 35-30 at halftime, and a Monroe (1-2) basket with 7:23 to play in the third quarter gave the Express a 43-33 lead. However, a 15-2 Viking run over 5:14 ended with an Ireana Olivio (Yonkers, NY/Maria Regina) basket with 2:37 remaining in the quarter to give Westchester a 48-45 lead. From there, a battle ensued. Westchester held a brief eight-point lead with 7:45 to play in the game, but a 9-0 Monroe lead gave the Express a 59-58 lead with 4:49 to play. 31 seconds later, a Mikaelyn Hannon (Yonkers, NY/Peekskill HS) basket put the Vikings in the lead for good. Westchester ended the game on a 10-2 run to secure the win.

Also for Westchester, freshman Kylee Taxiera (Ossining, NY/Ossining HS) added 10 points and three rebounds.

The game proved to be one of the best defensive efforts of the season for the Vikings, as Westchester forced 34 Monroe turnovers, while committing only 15, giving the Vikings a 29-15 edge in points off turnovers. Westchester also scored 21 points at the free throw line, compared to only three for Monroe.

Westchester Community College returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 4, when the Vikings travel to face Community College of Rhode Island, the 13th-ranked team in the NJCAA. The game will mark the fifth time during seven games this season that the Vikings will have faced a team ranked in the nation's top-15 at some point this season.
