(Valhalla, NY) - What a difference a week makes. Exactly seven days after suffering through the most disappointing of losses against Region XV powerhouse, Nassau Community College, Westchester Community College rallied for its best all-around effort of the young season. The Vikings scored three times during the first 10 minutes of play, and allowed only four shots over 90 minutes of play as Westchester stormed past visiting Dutchess Community College, 9-0 at Barrett Field. With the win, the Vikings are now 2-1 overall, 2-1 in NJCAA Region XV play, and 1-0 in Mid-Hudson Conference competition.
The win was Westchester CC's 23 consecutive Mid-Hudson Conference victory as the Vikings seek their sixth consecutive conference crown during the 2021 season. The win was also Westchester's eighth straight against Dutchess CC, dating back to Sept. 24, 2012, when the teams played to a 0-0 tie.
Westchester took control by flipping the script after their defeat one week ago, this time coming out of the gate quickly. Freshman
Bayron Goff (Wappingers Falls, NY/Roosevelt HS) finished an
Isaias Argueta (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) crossing pass 1:20 into the game to make it 1-0. Just over three minutes later, freshman
Eduardo Vazquez (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) picked up his own rebound, and deposited a shot for his third goal of the season to make it 2-0 Vikings. Before the game was 10 minutes old, it was 3-0 as Argueta finished a long run with an outside blast that found the lower right corner only 8:23 into the game.
From there, the Vikings coasted.
Alejandro Torres (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) ripped an outside shot off of a nifty feed from
Oscar Umanzor (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) to make 4-0, 15:58 into play. Five minutes later, Goff found Argueta in transition, and Argueta notched his second goal of the game for a 5-0 lead that brought the game into halftime.
The second half saw much of the same. Goff scored his second goal of the game at 49:31, tapping in a gorgeous feed from
Alejandro Torres (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) to make it 6-0. Two minutes later, Torres scored his second goal of the game after an impressive one-on-one effort for a 7-0 advantage. Umanzor scored off a Goff assist at 60:32 for an 8-0 lead, and sophomore
Robert McDonald (Bronx, NY/Glenmuir) capped the scoring with his first career goal for the Vikings at 85:54 for the 9-0 final.
Westchester CC out-shot Dutchess 39-4, and held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Freshmen goalkeepers
Brian Guaman (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) and
Christopher Zhagui (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester HS) combined to complete WCC's second shutout of the 2021 season.
Westchester Community College returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 25 when the Vikings travel to Suffolk Community College for a 1:00 p.m. start.
