Mylene Smith (Peekskill, NY/Hendrick Hudson HS) scored a game-high 17 points, and freshman Adrianna McFadden (Ossining, NY/Ossining HS) registered her third double-double of the 2021-2022 season with 15 points and 11 rebounds, as the Westchester Community College Women's Basketball team opened the 2022 portion of their schedule with a 59-39 win over Bronx Community College at Viking Gymnasium. With their third straight win overall, the Vikings are now 6-4 for the 2021-2022 season.
It took a dominant fourth quarter for the Vikings to pull away to defeat Bronx CC (1-3) for the fourth straight time dating back to 2018 as the teams battled for the first 30 minutes of play. Westchester trailed 12-11 after the first quarter, but the Vikings had a strong second quarter to take a 22-20 lead at halftime. The lead was extended to 36-30 heading into the fourth quarter with the issue very much in doubt.
However, the Vikings opened the final stanza on a 16-4 run to make it a 52-34 game with 2:53 to play, and never looked back.Â
McFadden scored nine of her 15 points during the fourth quarter.
The Vikings shot 30% for the game, compared to 26% for Bronx CC, and out-rebounded the Broncos 53-49. Westchester also forced 39 Bronx CC turnovers, while committing 30.
Also for the Vikings, freshman Kaylee Taxiera (Ossining, NY/Ossining HS) scored nine points, and added six steals, five assists, and four rebounds, whole sophomore
Donjeta Prelvukaj (Bronx, NY/St. Catharine) had eight points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Westchester also received a big game from freshman
Mikaelyn Hannon (Yonkers, NY/Peekskill HS), who 11 rebounds.
Westchester CC returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 29 when the Vikings travel to Camden County College for a 1:00 p.m. start.
