Poughkeepsie, NY – Women's Volleyball came home victorious on Thursday, in what has been their biggest win to date as they defeated Dutchess in thrilling fashion. The Vikings came back after being down in the match 2-0, in games that were not particularly close, and won 3-2 (17-25, 15-25, 25-20 25-22, 15-9).
After falling to the Falcons in 4 games at home on Tuesday, the team traveled to Poughkeepsie looking for some revenge and to even the season series. Their chances didn't look good early as they were unable to keep up with the DCC attack. After falling behind 2-0 and one game away from losing in a sweep, the Vikings were able to turn the match around with a thrilling 25-20 win to get back in the match. Evening things up proved to be no easy task though, as they won a close 25-22 set to force a decisive game 5.
With the momentum on the Viking's side, they kept their foot on the gas and cruised to the thrilling upset. The win marks the 2
nd season in a row where the Westchester earned the split in the regular season versus top ranked Dutchess, which lost for just the 2
nd time this year.
Sara Ortiz (Elmsford, NY/White Plains HS) once again kept the team in the match with her outstanding defensives skills, recording 27 digs and 5 blocks.
Gabriella Cresti Caetano (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers HS) recorded 18 kills while
Mikaelyn Hannon (Yonkers, NY/Peekskill HS) posted 16.
AngelaRosa Garofalo (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) had a strong game with 13 kills of her own.
The Vikings move to 6-3 on the season and 4-1 in the Mid-Hudson Conference to keep pace with the Falcons atop the MHC standings. With the success of both teams and their close head to head matches, they seem destined to see each other in the playoffs. Westchester returns to action on Saturday, October 1
st as they travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on Kingsborough and last year's region champion Queensborough in a double dual at 12 noon.
