Her-storic! - Women's Cross Country Scores as a Team For First Time in School History

Oct 10

October 10, 2022
Milton, NY - When Cross Country was reinstated as a sport in the fall of 2016, the hope was that the women's team would develop into a perennial contender.  However, low participation numbers prevented from the team from scoring at meets, although the program did have several top individual runners in the first few seasons.  Then came the pandemic.  The sport was not offered these past few years due to COVID, but came into this fall with a lot of optimism with enough students interested to field a team.

Though the women's team ran as many as 4 harriers in a race this fall, it wasn't until this past Saturday where the Vikings posted enough finishers to factor into the team scoring.  The Vikings traveled to Milton, NY and participated in the Mount Saint Mary's College Invite, and not only finished as the top JUCO team, but they scored as a team for the first time in school history!

Vania Nerea Diaz Santos finished first for Westchester for the first time this season, finishing the 6k course 18th overall with a time of 29:40.  Right behind her was Mylene Smith who has been among the top finishers all season long.  She stopped the clock at 30:17, good for 20th overall.  Paula Camila Bermeo Chumbi finished 40th and newcomers Irene Maris and Gianna Marziliano rounded out the top 5 for the Vikings.

The team finished 7th overall and took home the top JUCO award.  For complete race results, click here.  Weschester returns to action on Saturday, October 15th as they compete in the St. Joe's Invitational which will also serve as the Region 15 Championships.
