Valhalla, NY – Women's Volleyball held their Sophomore Day on Thursday, which marked their last regular season home match for the Vikings.
AngelaRosa Garofalo (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS),
Ireana Olivo (Yonkers, NY/Maria Regina HS),
Mikaelyn Hannon (Yonkers, NY/Peekskill HS),
Isabella Masucci (Valhalla, NY/Valhalla HS), and Chidimma Chmia (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers HS) all will be moving on from Westchester after this year. Unfortunately, the Vikings were unable to make that last match a win, as they fell to Ulster 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 12-25, 22-25).
Game 1 was highly contested and could have gone either way at the end. Though Westchester was unable to finish the game with a win, they played some of their best volleyball this season. That carried over into the 2
nd game where they were able to pull ahead late and even up the match.
But that energy seemed to wear off in game 3. While it was close early with the Vikings tied with the Senators at 6-6, Westchester seemed to fall into a funk where errors and misjudgments led to an insurmountable lead and the tough Senator attack took full advantage and pulled way. Like they have done most of the year, Westchester bounced back. But as highly contested as game 4 was, Ulster was able to put the match away and avoid a deciding game 5 with a steady charge late in the set.
Sara Ortiz (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) and Garofalo led the way with 16 digs each.
Isabella Masucci kept the offense on the attack with 17 assists. Gabrialla Cresti Caetano led the team with 8 kills.
The loss bring the Viking's record to 9-5 in the season, but they remain 9-3 within Region XV. They return to action on Saturday, October 15
th as they travel to Rockland Community College to take on Nassau and Hostos in a double dual match up at 12 noon.
